Bukchon Hanok Village is defined by the intimate scale of its streets and the layered coexistence of old and new elements, creating a dense and diverse pedestrian experience. The project seeks to reinforce the unique spatial atmosphere of Bukchon, where tradition, culture, and the physical texture of the urban fabric shape the character of the street.

Through an analysis of Bukchon’s urban specificity, the architecture was conceived as an extension of the street itself — a pedestrian-oriented structure that actively participates in the public realm. The building mass is fragmented in response to the fine grain and density of the surrounding pedestrian environment, while even small portions of the site are set back to provide spatial relief and visual variation along the street. These recessed spaces become moments of pause, interaction, and occupation for pedestrians.

Rather than defining boundaries through conventional windows and doors, the fragmented surfaces are expressed as spatial gaps and voids. The three-dimensional architectural volume creates sheltered and enclosed urban spaces that mediate between the building and the street. These in-between spaces function at times as entrances, windows, resting areas, or shaded thresholds, contributing to the continuity and richness of the streetscape.

The streets of Bukchon extend into the building through these openings and voids, transforming circulation into a continuous urban path. Integrated with the void spaces, the interior route engages in dialogue with the surrounding context through framed views, openings, and gaps, ultimately leading to a rooftop space that opens toward panoramic views of Bukchon and the city beyond.
