This project involves the transformation of an existing underground public parking area, spanning four floors and totaling 36,882 square meters, into a 24,205 square meter museum. The proposed museum will be situated on the site of the former public execution grounds outside Seoul's West Gate, known as Manchogeon Stream, which witnessed countless lives lost during the 600-year Chosun Dynasty. Notably, it also served as a place of persecution for Catholics around 200 years ago, making it a significant site in Korean Catholic history and a representative pilgrimage destination.

The design seeks to honor the historical wounds and promote healing by repurposing the space into a commemorative cultural hub, showcasing history and art exhibitions. The museum will serve as a space where the past's scars can be acknowledged while promoting contemporary cultural activities. The architectural approach will strike a delicate balance between preserving the historical significance of the location and providing a modern, inviting environment for visitors.

By thoughtfully integrating history and art, the museum aims to facilitate a profound reflection on the past while fostering cultural enrichment in the present. The exhibition spaces will be thoughtfully curated to engage visitors on an emotional and intellectual level, offering insights into the country's complex history and the enduring power of art as a means of expression and healing.

Through this transformation, the project endeavors to create a place of remembrance, paying homage to those who suffered while simultaneously fostering a vibrant cultural setting that embraces inclusivity, education, and artistic exploration. The envisioned museum aspires to be a beacon of hope, inspiring conversations about the human experience and acting as a bridge between the past, present, and future for both local and international audiences.
