Seoul Frei Waldorf School

Location: 97, Okgil-ro 56beon-gil, Sosa-gu, Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi-do

GFA: 4518.85㎡

This school was planned by 100 parents who wanted to give a good education to their children.

The veracity this objective was able to realize a new school. There were contractors, lawyers, bankers, material vendors, electrical workers etc., who came together to achieve this aim from budgeting, property selection, design and actual construction of the school. This process involved great architectural challenges and dealing with special circumstances.

We focused on the realization of the school that was aimed at bringing the Waldorf philosophy to realization in an urban area.  There was no outside funding on this project, and it was completed by the cooperative society of parents, making it a particularly rare and difficult project to be realized.

The school was planned as a village for its students rather than as a typical public school.  Each class had a different environment, size, location and characteristic, as brightness, view, etc. The path around each class was planned as a village road. The trail located at the side of the school had a path that led to a small square, terrace to the park, courtyard, and void space, where students, parents, teachers and school administrators alike can run into and meet friends at each corner.

We mainly planned the path to be stack vertically. Through this, an interesting façade was composed and a gap along the floor was created. This can amplify communications between the entire school community. Due to the low project budget, significant portions of construction were completed by the parents over the weekend, making this a highly meaningful project.
