M Street, Itaewon
수직적으로 확장되는 도시풍경
Year: 2019
Location: Yongsan-Gu, Seoul
Area: 1,978m²
Located in the multicultural heart of Seoul, this building in Itaewon occupies a prominent commercial site where pedestrian and vehicular flows intersect. Rising behind it, the iconic sloped streets of the Namsan hillside form a distinctive urban backdrop, deeply embedded in the memory and identity of the city.
The project began with the intention of extending the dynamic movement of the surrounding streetscape deep into the building itself. In response, the exterior incorporates a series of open stairways that emerge from the street level and continue upward to the rooftop, creating a direct vertical connection between the city, the building, and its occupants. Along this path, pedestrians engage not only with the life of the street but also with activities unfolding inside the building, while expansive views open toward the historic silhouette of Namsan Mountain.
The façade system gradually transforms and shifts three-dimensionally from the street into the interior, creating a fluid spatial continuity throughout the building. Its folded and kinked geometry guides movement naturally upward, forming a smooth transition from the urban ground plane to the rooftop. This circulation path acts as an extension of the street itself, drawing light, sound, and atmosphere into the building.
Each façade element is carefully articulated with its own rhythm and orientation, responding to context, light, and directionality. The vertical façade modules function as louvers, mediating climate and environmental conditions within the interior spaces. At the same time, the layered façade blurs the conventional boundaries between floors and interior zones, both vertically and horizontally.
Ultimately, the project seeks to create a form of vertical urban movement that exists both in harmony with and independently from the surrounding street condition — a continuous architectural promenade that reads as a smooth and harmonious urban melody.
